My Crazy Experience With Streamyx Combo 4 mbps / 2 mbps

Must READ *who ever want to apply streamyx combo 4 mbps or 2 mbps , please read my article before fall into streamyx plan contract trap.

i look at streamyx combo promotion and it tell me that we should go for the 4 mbps because the price is cheapest among the market if we need high speed or broadband connection !

I been call around TM asking about this promotion : is it any hidden charges or hidden promotion that not stated in the advertisement and newspaper !

TM operator knowledge make me want to vomit : they dont even know what is streamyx zone and hotspot ! so after changing a few operator - finally i reached to a good operator which able to answer all my question like below :

Most of you will say this is a standard and normal procedure for registering a streamyx but then i will say it is a trick and scam from TM -  

Let say : when you want to get the streamyx broadband 4 mbps - they will tell you to get a fixed phone line first , then after you register the fixed phone line which cost you Deposit(RM75),Stamp Duty(RM10),Wiring Charges(RM30-50), 

and the TM technician will come to your area to check isnt it your area is supporting 4 mbps - 

finally they found out that your area dont have it - they ask you to take 1 mbps (the maximum supporting speed *90% in Malaysia is just only 1 mbps) if you dont , you need to goto TM point to cancel your fixed line.

So in this case - most of the people will decide to take the 1 mbps streamyx combo which is RM 110 or 

they decide to cancel the fixed phone line , so they will lost Deposit + Stamp Duty + Wiring Charges =RM 135

Majority - people who fall into this trap and scam - they will decide to choose the RM110 plan or lower speed plan . finally i thinks most of you know what happening in the whole promotion .

So they are using 4 mbps which is RM 160 monthly advertisement to attract people which is new user like me or old user (which is using the streamyx basic 1.0 line or lower ) to change to this package and they will get another 12 months contract with the old user by using this way.

So actually their's promotion is 12 months contract + 1.0 mbps streamyx line + fixed line =  RM110 which is about RM 10++ cheaper compare to streamyx basic home 1.0 mbps.

Anyway , please ask them a lot of question before doing any registration !

5 tips to better Streamyx connection

Here are five most important tips on how to get really stable Streamyx connections. Everything else is secondary! What I meant by "stable connections" is the physical connection between your modem and Telekom exchange. In other words, the "hardware" part of it must be properly checked and adjusted to reduce possibilities of connection problems later.

1.Use high quality internal wiring - Always ensure you install your internal telephone wiring with high quality twisted pair cables. Run your cables away from noisy sources like fluorescence lamps, heavy machines like fridge or washers. Use high quality splitters and connectors. I also recommend the phone cables from your wall jack to the modem be changed every one or two years. This is to reduce chances of copper oxidation that happens with really old wires.

2.Rusty phone jacks - My friend’s Streamyx connection is horrible. Despite numerous complains to TMnet, nothing much can be done to improve the connection. One day I went to check the phone jacks used and it’s all covered in greenish rusts. Rust is produced due to oxidation. A small item like phone jack is the whole culprit. After changing the entire phone cable with new jacks, the connection is sustained for 24 hours a day without problems.

3.Separate router and modem unit- I’ve used this configuration ever since I started with Streamyx. The idea is to have separate router and modem units. Such setup somewhat lowers the CPU load of the modem and allows more CPU time to process incoming high speed data (light NAT translation) and pass it directly to the router. The router will then sort out the traffic (heavier NAT translation) to various computers. Also check whether your modem and router is overheating. As you’ve known with computers, overheated ambient temperature inside the modem will cause "crashes" and modem needs to reboot.

4.Check for noisy phone lines - Noise and attenuation in the phone line are the top issues that most customers are facing. Pick up your phone, press a single digit and listen quietly for few seconds. If you hear hums, hisses or crackling sounds, no matter how soft, then you have a noisy phone line. You will need to take this up to Telekom so that they can check for the noisy segment in your cable. Also avoid installing too many phones as this will cause overall signal loss.

5.Use high quality modems - Some modems is just not suitable for your phone line, especially if you live too far away from Telekom exchange. Low quality modem will not be able to cope with bad attenuation and signal loss. Modems that overheat easily are also prone to give problems and fire hazard. Invest in good modems. I personally have used Alcatel ST510 and Aztech 600ER. These are quite stable and always-on for months between reboots. Also their mainboard and power adapter do not overheat.

I was suprised looked at the newspaper advertisement about the new offer from celcom broadband.. My Opinion: MetroFon/PenangFon is the best provider I have ever used here in Malaysia. I was using them during my stay in Penang for more then a year. RM60 for 2mbps up/down. Can’t beat that now can you damn Streamyx!!

If you realize, many of the providers above only offer up to a maximum of 2mbps and the prices are ridicules. Is there a limitation to what providers can give to end users set by the gov?

Apple has introduced a new firmware upgrade 1.1.1 for iPhone which is officially irreversible (although workaround instructions to downgrade to version 1.0.2 has emerged). And once updated, iPhone is uncrackable and thus users can no longer jailbreak or install useful third-party applications or software to iPhone other than the one authorized by Apple. And it’s also cannot be hacked to unlock SIM-lock so iPhone can only be used on AT&T cellphone network in US and other Apple’s partnered carriers in other countries. In future, all new iPhone models will be sold pre-installed with new firmware 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 or newer out of the box.

However, there is possibility that some stores may still stock some inventories of iPhone in older firmware version 1.0.x. If you intend to unlock the iPhone for use with carriers other than AT&T or to install third-party native applications and don’t want to lose any call functions by downgrading an iPhone that was previously unlocked, it’s important to check and verify that the iPhone you’re getting is in fact comes with old 1.0.x version of firmware software, and never yet been upgraded before. The checking procedure on iPhone to determine its firmware version is also useful is you decide to buy iPhone on eBay or auctions sites. Normally iPhone firmware version is shown in iTunes after activating and on every successful connecting. The following methods will allow you to check the firmware even before the phone is activated.

How to Check iPhone Firmware from Packaging Box Serial Number

If you want to know your iPhone firmware version without unwrap and open up the package, the serial number of iPhone wrote on a sticker on the box may provide you some hint. In fact, if you order a phone online from Apple, it’s possible to see what is your iPhone’s serial number when you check your invoice online, even before before the phone arrives at your hand.

A typical iPhone will have a serial number in the following format: 7T727XYZWH8

The serial number is made up of several blocks which have its own meaning, as explain below:

Digits 1 to 3 (7T7) = Year / Batch code
Digits 4 to 5 (27) = Week of manufacture
Digits 6 to 8 (XZY) = Unique identifier part of the S/N
Digits 9 to 11 (WH8) = 8Gb model

The only significant number in the serial ID number to help you guess which firmware version your iPhone has are digit 4 and digit 5, which show week of manufacturing of the iPhone. It has been known that iPhone version 1.1.1. started shipping to customers from week 39 onwards. From week 47 onwards, Apple releases iPhone version 1.1.2 with bootloader version 4.6, upgraded from v3.9.

So if your 4th and 5th digits in iPhone serial number is less than 39 (38 or lower), it’s almost certain that the iPhone as firmware 1.0.2. If the number is greater than 39 (40 and higher), it’s also almost certain that the firmware in iPhone will be 1.1.1 or newer, where you probably need to start arranging to return the phone if you’re not planning to use the phone on AT&T. Grey area is when the digits is 39, where the iPhone has equal chances to be 1.0.2 or 1.1.1. To actually check the correct firmware version, you have to use other methods listed below.

How to Determine if iPhone is On Firmware version 1.1.1 or Older 1.0.x

If your aim is simply to check and determine whether your iPhone is running on newer version 1.1.1 or older version 1.0.x of firmware, the fastest and easiest method is by holding down the Power (Sleep/Wake) and Home button until iPhone enters restore mode by displaying one of the following image on screen - sync cable and iTunes logo or yellow triangle.

The sync cable and itunes logo is the new firmware 1.1.1. restore screen, while the yellow triangle is the old firmware 1.0.2 restore screen. However, this may change in future firmware upgrade.

How to Check iPhone Firmware Version (Field Test Mode)

1. Turn on the phone and slide to unlock the keypad. iPhone screen should show that only emergency calls is allowed.
2. Enter the following key sequence: *3001#12345#* and then finish by pressing Call button. This will enter field test mode of iPhone.
3. Tap on Versions.
4. The firmware revision information of iPhone installed out of the box will be shown on LCD screen. The following guide will match the firmware revision to the firmware version.

   03.12.06_G - firmware version 1.0.0
   03.14.08_G - firmware version 1.0.1 or 1.02
   04.01.13_G - firmware version 1.1.1
   04.02.04_G - firmware version 1.1.1

There's one good thing about working night shift, is that I can get my hand on The Sun newspaper. I have to get it fast though because it will be gone in half an hour after it arrives in the building's lobby at around 6.45 a.m.

You'll think, wah Malaysian are all so keen reader now. Sapu all The Sun newspaper in half an hour time. At first I think I was proud of my fellow Malaysian too, until just now when I saw the stalls worker of the cafeteria taking a stack (20-30) of The Sun newspaper to her stall. I don't think she's gonna read any of it. Most obvious reason is to use it to pack nasi lemak.

Then another man from the Indian stall took yet another stack of The Sun and walk sheepishly towards his stall. I was looking at him, that's why he is a bit embarassed. I mean, Come on, this newspaper is meant to be read. If you want to pack your nasi lemak or roti canai use la old newspaper. If each stall took a stack then there won't be much left for those that really read the newspaper.

Let's say The Sun deliver about 300 circulation to the office building I worked in, half of the 300 being used to pack nasi lemak, pack mee hoon goreng and to start the stove. The real readership the got was 150 readers in the office building I worked in. Ah, The Sun is not really reaching to it's target audience, what will the advertiser say about this if they find out that half of the new circulation went to nasi lemak packaging.

No wonder we don't have a newspaper vending machine like those in the USA, where you put in some coin, open the cabinet and take a newspaper. If it is used here, one of the mamak stall worker will put in a coin, take all the newspaper in the cabinet. There goes our Vision 2020.
